Shoes form the foundation of any stylish outfit. It’s an accessory that can provide an instant seasonal update, so why not trysuede knee high boots or sculptural kitten heels for size?
If I were to describe the F/W 2016 shoe trends in a few words, what would I say? Well, anything goes! From 70s shapes, extreme maximalism, dainty classics to space-age silhouettes, there’s a trending shoe for all tastes.
But there’s a definite increase in footwear embellishments, heel shape play, all over metallics, and bold animal print & snake materials. Oh, and don’t give away your ankle boots or pointy toe shoes anytime soon. They’re as relevant as ever!
Following I present 6 fabulous shoe trends for stepping up your Autumn/Winter style.

1. Well Heeled
Every street-style photographer’s favourite detail, AW16’s heels come in slick sculptural forms. From wooden geometric shapes at Marni to Art Deco-worthy heels at Marco De Vincenzo, pair with cocoon or asymmetric silhouettes, and prepare to be the talking point at your next art-crowd soirée.
5. Marques Almeida’ tricolour mules, $573.66
2. Put A Sock In It
Another eighties nod, style your vertiginous stilettos with a personality revealing ankle sock. From crystal embellished to sporty striped, glitter detail to polka dots, keep your heels simple and your socks as statement-making as possible.
3. Great Lengths
Our favourite AW16 footwear pin-ups are an eclectic bunch – from Catherine Deneuve and her knee-high boots at Saint Laurent to Siouxsie Sioux’s eighties over-the-knee numbers (complete with Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini’s signature lace and velvet). Whatever your preferred length, pair with an A-line midi skirt or wide culottes for a look that’s more work-appropriate and less Pretty Woman.
4. All-Out Adornment
Forget minimalism, embellishment stays strong for AW16 so look to J.W. Anderson for encrusted kitten heels, Maison Margiela for gem-buckle loafers and Dolce & Gabbana for pompom, sequin and glitter-detail Mary Janes, bound to make even the most restrained of dressers jealous.
5. The Velvet Touch
Nothing screams opulence more than a texture that shouldn’t touch the ground. For the ultimate in downtown dandyism, team Haider Ackermann’s gold velvet boots with tapered track pants, or offset Fendi and Jimmy Choo’s lavish heels with distressed denim. Just be sure to keep your Uber app on standby – velvet and rainwater are two things that should never make an acquaintance.
6. Mortal Kombat
Gem embellished or floral printed, utility-inspired army boots provide a fierce take on femininity. Swap the great outdoors for the dance floor and pair your stompy footwear (Fausto Puglisi and Tabitha Simmons are firm favourites) with an oversized sweater dress and a pendant choker – the Courtney Love-esque answer to clubwear.
In conclusion, simple shoes this Fall/Winter are not (many). The more complex & intricate the better! Even though most of these designer shoes aren’t going to be plucked out from store shelves to be simply on a day-to-day basis, they’re certainly an indication that it’s time to have even more fun with fashion! But most importantly, not to take fashion too freaking seriously! Especially not the shoes ?
